FWD Hub-Centric Supercharged Diesel Bicycle
This project began as an economical commuter bike for getting to work every day. I started with an inexpensive Schwinn Kokomo Beach Cruiser Frame, and replaced the factory front rim with a custom hub-centric engine and wheel assembly. The bike is powered by a 196cc Swirl Chamber IDI Diesel Engine and Comet TAV2 CVT. The small 3hp diesel engine gets a 15psi boost from a VW smog pump acting as a small roots style supercharger. On average the bike gets over 100mpg and has a top speed of 45mph. The bike caught the attention of the producers for the Diesel Brothers and they asked me to rebuild it for an episode based around a GIANT brand Fat Tire Bike. As the filming progressed they asked if I could design a small cargo trailer so the bike would work for the shows story line of running parts for the shop. In the end, the bike was auctioned off for $10,000 to benefit the Mountain Valley JDRF charity fundraiser.
